We are one large family and we spend all of our time farming!  We have been at Plurenden for 10 years now and our girls are happy to be offering their milk for sale from the farm-gate or by delivery.

Our milk is pasteurised but not homogenised so that the rich cream still rises to the top!

We believe that the creamiest tastiest milk comes from happy healthy cows that are allowed to graze all summer & are fed home-grown forage through the winter.

The farm is managed to ensure we are sustainable with the natural environment, whilst being as efficient as possible, this includes rearing all of our calves at home.

Will, Beatrice Katherine and Alice Hamilton, Eleanor, WIll, John and Yvonne Gormley Neil and Henry Pike, Jonathan and Gemma Gormley and Madeleine and Arthur Pike!

All together we are plurenden milk!  We have all had our roots in the farming life right from our first steps!

We came to Plurenden in Kent to merge two families together to take advantage of the beautiful farm and in the hope that by farming together at one farm instead of two we can make it work financially and environmentally sustainable.

We are involved in every aspect of running the farm every day- milking, feeding the cows and youngstock, growing the forage, mucking out and now processing and bottling the freshest milk, cream and churning butter!

We would like to thank all our customers for their support and we will continue to ensure the freshest milk comes directly to you from our cows grazed here in the garden of England

STAFF

We also have a super team of farm staff here at Plurenden, there is always so much to do the milking, feeding youngstock, cleaning beds and fieldwork.  Not forgetting that we bottle fresh milk and pot cream too!

If you are interested in joining us get in touch!

  • Each day we produce 8,000 litres of milk,
  • Each cow averages about 25 litres per day at her peak lactation,
  • The first milk a cow produces is called Colostrum- this is packed full of antibodies for her calf,
  • The milk is stored in bulk tanks at 3 degrees and collected every-other night and taken away for processing,
  • Pasteurised milk is heated up very quickly and cooled again to remove any harmful bacteria,
  • Homogenised milk is pushed through a hole under pressure to make all the fat globules that occur in milk the same size and disperse evenly throughout the milk,
  • A Glass of milk is a source of protein, calcium, potassium, iodine, phosphorus, vitamins B2, B1 and B12,
  • To get the same amount of calcium from other foods you would have to eat- 63 Brussels sprouts, 11 servings of spinach or 4 servings of broccoli!
  • The milk is separated to remove the cream to give us semi-skimmed and skimmed milks.
  • In the UK hormones are not given to cows to enhance production- it is illegal
  • Costs- We are paid per litre of milk produced we currently receive 20ppl (pence per litre) and it costs us 30ppl to produce.

We are not on one of the worst milk contracts by far- many farmers are much worse off at the moment some receiving as little 15ppl, a very hard time for the dairy industry.

Hence the Opening of the FARM SHOP– we hope you enjoy some of our fresh whole milk and learning about what goes into producing it!
