There is always something about mental health in the news and magazines with many stars encouraging people to be more open about it but of course that does not help the many people who keep it all to themselves.
So how do you help yourself?
There are many, many ways, from talking to someone to eating sensibly and living a good healthy life style, for many though theses are all hard to do so let’s start small and simple.
It does not matter if you have a garden or a window sill or if you have a small plant or seeds, just pick something that you can nurture, watch grow and even talk to, they do say this helps plants to grow.
It’s a nice feeling watching it change through the seasons, watch the buds grow and change into flowers. I find it amazing sometimes like when they need some water and then the stems prop back up looking all healthy again.
With some plants you can then pick the seeds for some new plants the next year, the cycle can go on with you growing and getting stronger with your plants.
I found that writing things down, not necessarily what was bothering me but just words and sentences that came to me. As I got a bit stronger they turned into letters and short stories. I tried painting and still enjoy that and drawing especially when away in the camper. One spring my kitchen side was full of seeds growing as I waited for them to get bigger and plant outside in the garden. I still like to lose myself in a book and it helps me to sleep. So no there are no hard and fast rules about what helps some people and sometimes it’s a combination of a lot of things. I am a loner but I know my very close friends are always there if I need them, I am very lucky to have them as they are what keep me going a lot of the time.
There are no quick fixes for mental health and sometimes you have to try a few things to find something that matches up to you. Always consult your doctor so they can help you.
