I took Mia to our local library so she could join and we could have a little quiet time and read some books, she loves books so was looking forward to our little adventure as she calls it.  I also wanted to do a bit of research.
Our library comes under the Shepway group and then Kent County Council so it covers a huge area.  I asked them if they have an advertising budget but they don’t and no local Facebook page just a KCC National Library one.  They gave me the website and said all the answers to my questions would be on there.
The site is easy to use and I looked up stats, here is a brief picture of what I found.  Click on Library and the stats will come up.
The building is very old and maintained really well, they make use of all of it, like the Adult Ed and the Skills Plus.  This building is where you go to register births and deaths in Folkestone and also The Sassoon Gallery and local Studies Collection are upstairs.
During the summer they have a children’s reading challenge that the schools could promote more.  National Library day they had some balloons and last year they dressed up for Book Week.  I really think that they would benefit by having their own Facebook page to let everybody know what events are happening, this could be linked to all the school and playgroup websites in the area, this is free advertising.  I was surprised that only a couple of the primary schools do a visit to the library, if all the schools visited and maybe linked it into Book Week surely that would be appealing.  If we want to keep our library’s then we have to let the people know what is happening and encourage them to use it more.  There are so many groups that could be held there like reading, knitting homework even authors could do readings and signings.
The library is even open on a Sunday so why not make it a family day out once a month especially in the winter when it is a struggle to entertain them without using the TV or electronic gadgets.

Mia loved it and is looking forward to going again.

Your and one other are the only schools that use it,, which is a shame. They need to advertise their events as you never get to see what is going on there. Thank you for reading xx

Thank you for writing this post Karen. Sofia and I have been members of the library for about 3 years now. I like it because the staff is friendly and they can reserve a book for me if it is not available at the library in Folkestone but is available in the other Kent libraries. I can also reserve the book online or over the telephone. I can borrow up to 30 books in one go for 3 weeks, renewable for 6 times!
Sofia’s school, Mundella Primary, has recently joined the Wood Avenue Library so now all the children have their card and are taught how to use a library. I hope that other schools are doing the same.
And regarding the FB page, I agree with you. It could only be a good thing to promote the library.

What do you think?
